The Constitution of the Rehabilitation Science Graduate Students’ Union
(2005-2006)

The RSGSU
1. The official name of this course union is the “Rehabilitation Science Graduate Students’ Union”, hereafter referred to as the RSGSU.
2. RSGSU Statement of Purpose: To improve intellectual, social and financial conditions of graduate students in the Department of Rehabilitation Science.

The Constitution
3. The Constitution of the RSGSU is intended to provide the Union with a brief operating guideline. The Executive Committee may amend it with final approval granted by a majority of the graduate students.

The Executive Committee
4. It is the responsibility of the Executive Committee to secure funding for the RSGSU. In particular, the Committee should apply for all grants available to a course union of this size
5. The election of the Executive Committee, which includes the President, Treasurer, and Secretary, shall be held annually at the beginning of the academic year.
6. The Executive Committee shall not lend support of the Union, either moral or financial, to any outside political group or agency without the expressed consent of the majority of the graduate students they represent.
7. The following responsibilities of each member of the Executive Committee are intended as a guideline. All members of the Committee should assist each other in the performance of their responsibilities.

The President
Duties of the President shall include:
1. Ensure that the Executive Committee is duly and fairly elected during an advertised general meeting of all graduate students.
2. Appoint other students to the Executive Committee as necessary (i.e. if a post remains vacant and must be filled).
3. Notify a representative of the Graduate Students’ Union of the University of Toronto (GSU) of his/her election and present the names of the Executive Committee in person after the election at the beginning of the academic year.
4. Ensure that the RSGSU is represented at the meetings of the GSU.
5. Ensure that there is an orderly replacement of the Executive Committee and transfer of the RSGSU documents from one academic year to the next.

The Treasurer
Duties of the Treasurer shall include:
1. Draft applications and secure funding for the RSGSU in consultation with the members of the Executive Committee.
2. Manage and be accountable to the Union for the funds granted.
3. Prepare a written financial statement for the RSGSU and the GSU at the end of each academic year.
4. Ensure that the debts of the Union are paid by the funds allocated to the RSGSU.

The Secretary
Duties of the Secretary shall include:
1. Ensure that the records of the Union meetings and business are kept up to date.
2. Be of assistance to the Executive Committee in the preparation of documents and publicity for special events.
